Impact International offers training for teachers and parents of special needs children. In May/June 2009, Impact International hosted an American team of specialists that went to Yemen to lead a Special Education Workshop. The Yemeni attendees included 26 teachers of Special Education children and 2 medical doctors. The attendees came from the Hadramout, Hodeidah, Taiz, Yareem, and Sana'a. The attendees were particularly interested in learning more about Autism, however they were also seeking and needing information on every area of Special Education.
The Impact Team was overwhelmed with the success of the event! The attendees told the Team that it was the best Workshop they had ever attended! The Workshop gave the teachers some practical tools and skills that they can use to help the special children of Yemen and their families.
The attendees urged the Impact Team to come back to Yemen to provide training for all regular education teachers as well as all pediatricians in Yemen. They said that these groups need training in diagnosing and identifying special needs children.
The Workshop also included an open meeting for parents of special needs children. Fifty parents attended this meeting! The intent was to provide support and dialogue for these families. As a father of a son with Down Syndrome, the President of Impact International shared his journey of struggles and victories as a parent of a special needs child. Also, another man on the American team spoke of his experiences as a father of a son with Autism. The parents asked many questions during the meeting. They told us that the meeting was very encouraging and helpful to them.
Future Special Education Projects in Yemen:
In partnership with Yemen's Social Fund for Development, Impact International will bring a team of American specialists to Yemen for about a month to provide training in Special Education.
In partnership with the Al-Eman Center, Impact International will bring a team of American specialists to Yemen for about a month to train in the areas of Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Physical Therapy.
